Someone asked me today, Do you think a spare tyre could be used as a emergency floatation device.

Here was the scenario- your swept of rocks by a king wave, there is nothing around that would seem to hepl so in desperation, someone throws you a spare tyre for your to try and hold onto until they can get down to you.

I think being the only thing available, well its better than nothing. They guy who asked me is actually going to try it some time and see what happens.

What do you guys think?

There's no Air in the tire so why would it float? The pressure is no different to the water.

My guess is it will float purely because of the air in it.

BUT if you chucked a steely at someone, you better hope you don't score a direct hit on there noggin and knock them out

Would probably have more chance floating if it was a alloy rim compared to a steel rim.

Personally, i wouldnt think it would float, the air in the tyre would provide some boyancy, but not enough to keep it afloat, considering the weight of the rim and the rubber in the tyre itself :)

Modern cars don't have inner tubes in the tyre that is unless your talking about a 'split-rim' from a Toyota Landcruiser Troopie.

When diving, I notice that the heavier the person, the more bouyant they are - so I think the weight issue of the tyre might be a good thing. I'd grab anything that was nearby if it were me (except a shark of course :D )

let us know the results of this experiment when it happens. I have voted no as I believe it will be too heavy and will sink. I whish I had a spare tyre on me know so I could test it out in the pool.
