Thinking of FESA Fire & Rescue Service Volunteer

Post by gkoutlis »

Hey guys,

I have a question and hope to get some responses.... I am strongly considering joining the Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service here in Perth...

Although its a volunteer - do you get any benefits?? equipment - safety gear???

And are there any fires that are on this forum who may be from Perth??? who could help me out ...

I appreciate any responses - thankyou in advance

George

George, they'll provide you with all the safety gear and training necessary - that goes for any volunteer Brigade be it FRS or BFS. Only problem you'll have is based on where you live. The Vollie FRS brigades in the metro area are on the outskirts - Mundaring, Wundowie, Kalamunda, Roleystone, Armadale 2nd, Rockingham 2nd, Kwinana, Mandurah 2nd, Yanchep..

There are 2 more-inner brigades being Bassendean 2nd and Guildford, but you dont often see them get a run..

hey george
it also depends on what u would rather do,
bfb= bush fires, car fires, ocaasionally strutural(if its in ur first turnoutarea but a frs brigade will be dual turnout)gas leaks etc etc
or
frs= car accidents, structural incidents and usually a frs vollie will back upa frs career depending on the station but most frs vollie stations dont do bush fires anymore

fast lane i agree with u yer never heard guilford or bassendean 2nd rarely hear bassendean 1st

it annoys people though if u sign up do training get gear etc etc and not go to any fires tho like spare of the moment thing....it needs commitment
what suburb do u live in george??
also most brigades depoendin on bfb or frs have different training regarding modules thers 1-3 which is compulsory and then thers the other 9, i think they've chanegd this now though

any questions ask

I agree with the others - you'll find it much easier to join a brigade if you live in an area with one.

If so, why not drop into it (in our area Saturday mornings are the time to stop by) and check it out. They'll be happy to show you around, explain the training and gear etc.

There aren't really any tangible benefits, though the training is good you'll make some excellent and trustworthy friends. One of the best things in my book is that often after a Saturday morning sched, I'll drop into the local shop to grab a coffee chill and everyone says g'day cos you've got the yellows on. They do appreciate the people who volunteer in the area.

On the training, the training package for volunteers is now the same across Bush Fire Brigades & Fire and Rescue Brigades. Your brigade's profile will define what 'extras' you get taught.. ie, Brigades with no structural risk will not get the training on it etc..

*grin* - my day job is in Northbridge, but I'm a 30-something that lives about 40kms from there. Nightclubs just don't appear on my radar these days

Gidday guys, Thank YOU HEAPS!!!!! for all the responses - they have been extremely helpful....

Chrissss - to answer your question from mine - I would like to get into the FRS so to speak - Rescue - for TA's and stuff like that - and car fires if any.... but yeah, as you know I do volunteer myself to assist in TA's already - this is done without impersonating a Police or Paramedic Officer - but i do have my Hi-Vis vest that I carry as well as a well equipped First Aid kit - and being the primary contact for First Aid Response at the University, I carry the items in my car to be easily identified by Paramedics and WAPOL....

I'm not much of an "action junkie" - but I'm in it to help save lives and make a difference as per why you do what you do....

I'm in South Perth, so yeah - not really sure which would be the "closest" station for me to join up to...

Meg, thanks for writing in too - greatly appreciate it - the closest station to South Perth would be the Kensington Station on George Street, Kensington - they have a Pump and Light tanker there - next door to SJA and WAPOL covering the South Perth/Vic Park/Como etc areas...

Friends is something that would definatley be a positive if I were to join up - and work in a team....

Fastlane - cheers for writing in and for the helpful info...

Chrissss, just a small question - Whats layflats mean??

Thanks to all who wrote to me... 8)

Layflats are a type of hose line which are a pain in the backside to roll up again!!!
Also George, dont forget to consider how long it will take u to get to the fire station if there is one, i live 10 mins by car away from mine and thats just pushing it (they are pretty much ready to go when i rock up) so u need to live kinda close to the station so as the units can get out asap.
