Nice pictures, were you flying or spotting when this occured?
Neither lol - my wife and I went to sit at the observation area (next to the tower) - and that's when FRS guys were coming fire-call, WAPOL and SJA. - Then things unfolded - and the crowd observing grew from 5-8 people to something like 40 people having a look.

Well fire call conditions is a good way to let people know that there's some excitement .
I'll have to view the pictures from home though photobucket is blocked at work and it doesn't even have as many popups as imageshack!

Well done on the pics George, considering the fact that you were limited in your choice of camera and all the action was quite some distance from where you were positioned!

The 20th pic from the bottom, and the 15th I think, shows a Cessna 182? - which taxied off 24L straight into the path of where the damaged plane was, clearly have no idea what this pilot was thinking at the time, and did get a grilling from ATC.
Also, just minutes prior to touch down of the crippled aircraft - Channel 7 Chopper (VH-TVG) started up and attempted to become airbourne to film the landing, without authorisation, to which the tower sternly advised the helicopter to "hold position".
Was just interesting to note that. YPJT was closed as of 18:20 - ATIS broadcasted as Zulu.

To the best of my knowledge (and someone with more familiarity with the airport may come and correct this), the tower closes around 8 or 9 PM on weeknights and about 6 PM on weekends. I think the starting and finishing times vary between summer and winter.
My guess would be that the tower controllers stayed there while this incident was happening, which is why it closed at 6:20pm instead of 6pm.

Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm AWST
Weekends 8am to 6pm AWST
June to August
Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm AWST
Weekends 8am to 6pm AWST

From memory the FRS turnout was Canning Vale 2.4, Fremantle 2nd and Murdoch. (I think Canning Vale pump was on another job)
Close A_E - it was actually Murdoch who was previously on another job (a scrub fire) - Basically upon arrival, Canningvale 2.4 asked if Murdoch were enroute. 6AR advised, negative, they are on another job - 2.4 replied with request to get another Pump enroute - which is where Fremantle 2nd got turned out. So i think the Series 4 - should be Murdoch (i may be wrong though)...

the engine wasn't actually running... FTZ has a turbine engine, so when the engine is shut down, the prop will continue to turn
