My scanner setup (bogan!)

Post by Bonez »

Hi peoples,

For the geeky among us, I present 3 photos from my ultra professional scanner setup.
It is purely mobile based, but it works a treat.

Equipment: Uniden 93xlt scanner, Magnetic base, a mobile one "Scantenna" and an "ebay" FM radio transmitter, so that I can hear the scanner coming through my car radio. Very useful for the airband, especially when you are doing about 40km/hr or more... :)

I used the same idea in my last car. The problem was that the transmitter frequency varied with temperature; from a cold morning to a hot afternoon could be as much as 200kHz, enough to lose it completely. PITA retuning. Also, not a good idea with transceivers
Hooray for car stereos with MP3 input. The other thing I thought of is the phone-hands-free input that some car stereos have. Finding the manual for the one that comes with the car could be a hassle

Having seen your setup bonez, I just ventured out to the car after realizing I have a FM transmitter in the glove box. I found it difficult to hear the handheld above the other scanner I have in the car that has an external speaker. Connected the Transmitter to the handheld and now I can hear it loud enough. :)

What sort of range do you get out of the setup?? I have found mine works really well (Have same scanner connected with the same antenna as you but bull bar mounted) in open areas but struggles in the city and suburbs compared to the UBCT9 I have. But a good little setup you have there. Thankyou for bringing the transmitter to my attention.

I think I have lost the plot, why did I not think of that aswell.

As you said, transmitter may drift off depending on conditions; have found this has occurred when I connect Laptop to it.

The one I was using is pretty cheap and cruddy. You can buy more stable ones but $$$

I've never had any issues with the FM transmitter apart from when trying to scan in or around the 80-88mhz range, a little interference is present :)

Not had any frequency drift or anything similar.

I was in Bickley yesterday and drove up to the big TV broadcast towers. As I turned on to Television road, the FM transmitter tuned to 87.0mhz was immediately over powered by ABC TV's analogue audio carrier. Nothing was coming through on the scanner either, too much RF up there me thinks.
