I bet the afp loved getting involved

I feel sorry for them being stuck at the airport with not much to do. They must relish a bit of a chance to put the lights on lol.

Not AFP

Post by crewman »

Hey Woobla, Just to confirm - the vehicle and officers in attandance are actually AUP or Airport Uniformed Police. Although they wear the AFP uniform, are in fact WAPOL seconded to the Aiport for duties for up to 1 year at a time.
Bonus for AFP is these officers operate under dual legislation.

AFP/AUP

Post by crewman »

Woobla - the reasons behind the cross over are varied. Manpower is certainly one, I'd imagine it costs less to employ trained and experienced cops as opposed to selecting and training your own. One important factor I'm led to believe is the ability to perform state Police functions. The previous 'Force' residing at Aus Airports was the APS or Australian Protective Service. Although employed by the Australian Federal Police, were limited in powers. Most related to Commonwealth lands etc before they could be enacted/enforced. With having WAPOL gazetted officers, simple offences such as traffic, behaviour or theft for eg, could be handled on the spot. This dual power so to speak, can come in handy when required for other more sensitive situations if you get my drift - National Security related episodes at Airports are becoming more regular.

Cheers!
