Will it be an offence if somebody reverse engineers the encryption? Or if they disseminate the method afterward?

(I'd like to point out that I can barely remember my PIN let alone hack encryption :)

Only if there is legislation against it. I expect it would be more likely that the crime would be intercepting communications rather than unencrypting them. Surely cracking codes is not illegal.

Hackers got away with decrypting media encoding such as DVD. Legislation could make it illegal. Dunno about intercepting comms.. isn't that what we are already doing?

Dunno, that's why I asked... and don't call me Shirley

Sorry Madge. Its not illegal now (apparently, radio interception - but hang on a minute what is the difference between intercepting a trunked radio conversation and a cordless/mobile phone conversation?? Both are radio communications.) so it shouldn't be illegal if someone cracks the code.

Cracking the code I can't comment on though thats more than a grey area, its obviously not something you'd admit to.

Listening into analog currently is similar to listening to a normal radio station with restrictions on 'acting on information'.

Listening into cordless landline phones is completly and utterly illegal covered by the Communications Act of some sort, its a private conversation.

Anybody can prove me wrong though.

The difference here is legislative, not technology.

Yes, both are radio-type communications, but the former (trunked radio) is covered under the radiocommunications act whereas the cordless phones and similar devices are covered under the telecommunications act.

My non-lawyer perspective and understanding is that it's completely legal to listen to any radio communications in Australia, with the exception of a radio communication that is part of a telephone call (e.g. "phone patch", cordless phone, mobile phone, etc).

As for decrypting and encrypted radio transmission, of that I have no idea. I'm guessing that it's also not illegal, but that's all that it is ... a pure guess.

Certainly were active last night, though Perth Beat reception was fairly poor, but could have just been the weather.

It should be illeagle for anyone to intercept a trunked radio convo. because it is illeagle to intercept a phone convo., as was already pointed out. although it is doubtfull that it will be hacked/cracked because its incryption is twice as powerful as that used on internet banking. Most of the time peoples bank accounts are "hacked" is not because they have broken the encryption on the banks website but because the tool-bags have replied to a dodgey email and don't want to admitt it. Or by other means like credit card fraud and eftpos copying and obtaining someones P.I.N. Number.
So breaking the encryption is possible ,but don't hold your breath WARSUGers

Yep, good ol' Phishing, looking at porn and not checking for nasties afterwards, not typing the correct web address. There's a whole myriad of reasons why you get your details get borrowed. I doubt the encryption will be broken in my life time, and i think by the point it is it will have improved so that it can't be etc. But it would be kind of good to leave a transmission running with the encryption as a challenge for anyone that wants to try and crack it...There's bound to be a couple that want to try!
