It was around 30 and low humidity overnight there. You can also get some decent wind down the bottom of the hills there at night. It's common for the scarp area to have large fires which start in the wee hour of the morning. I guess also you have to hope that someone spots it before it has a chance to set in.

We don't doubt that it'll start or burn at that time of night, if only fires were like humans and went to sleep. But at that time of the night, it's not going to be sun shining through glass or something like that.

Haha, after years in a firefighting family, and being a firefighter, you get to the point of 'knowing' that a bush/scrub/grass fires is lit intentionally. Usually if accidental, then that person is attempting to extinguish, or will own up, and is usually involved with welding, grinding etc. You then get accidental due to fire escaping an intentional fire.

More often than not, if you arrive at a scrub fire, there is an incedinary device, or multiple ignition points, clear indication that it is intentional. You then often have fires at similar times, in similar areas and so on.

In this particular area, it seems that there is always someone around who wants to play with fire, and you just get to hear about it when there's a bit of wind and it takes off. Was told this morning that parts of the latest fire have been hard to get into, and get water through, due to excessive undergrowth, and having been in the area on many occasions, I don't doubt it at all.

Oh, and give me a midnight call anytime, beats the 3-4am, just when you're in that nice deep sleep...
