Three die in WA bushfire
December 31, 2007 - 6:57AM
Two adults and a child have died in a bushfire in Western Australia's eastern goldfields, police said today.
The bodies were recovered from two burnt out trucks in Boorabbin National Park between Southern Cross and Coolgardie about midnight last night, a police spokesman said.
Fire crews and police discovered the bodies in two of seven trucks burnt out and abandoned about 75 kilometres east of Southern Cross.
"One truck contained an adult body and the other truck contained an adult and what appeared to be the body of the child," the spokesman said.
Further examination of the scene was not possible due to the intense heat, but police would return to the scene early today to investigate, he said.
The road would also remain closed until further notice.
The bushfire has been burning since Friday, scorching more than 7500 hectares, downing powerlines and closing a major West Australian highway.

kalamunda icv at a big fire at the moment, currently called heartfield control, is around excalabur rd and marble close area, unsure of the very exact location. police are using midland channel non stop, one fire fighter with an eye injury, perth covering wangarra, fair few brigades at the incident, have only recently tuned in, so unsure of who exactly, some residents have already been told to evac, heard the police arranging vehicles to set up around other streets to be ready to get them to evac as well. Winds expected to be 35-55km/h.

Was listening to this from its beginning until 3am (when i fell asleep), both WAPol (Midland ch54) and 6AR. Police resources very stretched with road blocks and residential evacuations. VKI operator had to bring in vehicles from other districts (Cannington, Joondalup). Firies kept busy with very strong winds and wind direction changes. Command post for incident was relocated twice due to condition changes. I did hear a call of "one house lost" next to the Soils Ain't Soils yard off Hardey East Road, but certainly many homes under direct threat. Police were concerened for one woman who went in to a burning paddock to retrieve horses (she came out ok). The VKI operator sounded very concerned about WAPol personell not driving through, or being stationed near the fire fronts.
