Second Life

Post by Bobby »

Hi! :D

I am doing an assignment on Second Life. Has anybody here used it and have any comments? Does anyone know of anybody or any company who has made bucks out of it?

I remember seeing it July this year on an airline documentary, it was one of their technology shows. Very impressive idea. The thing that surprises me is that there are people who actually work full-time in that virtual world, who's only job is designing and selling items, clothes etc there. I assume thats what you'd mean by people making money from it? Cant remember much more though, as it was a late night flight. McDonalds and a number of other major corporations got into it at one stage, creating islands, billboards etc. Not sure how that turned out, or if they still do though..

Havent tried it yet though, some day i'll get around to it (probably sooner now that you've reminded me!)

I have recently got into Second Life and it can be quite addicting.

Might be opening a store in the near future. I am kinda new but if you have any easy questions fire away.

Thanks Turbo - how did you find it when you first started? Was it easy to work out how to use? Did you go the freebie option?

Have you seen any real life companies in there? Would their presence entice you to buy a real world product?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, but just trying to get a feel for it.....

Soooo the whole purpose is to pause your own life to live vicariously through a virtual character?

LOL!

Yeah - its pretty sad. (Sorry, don't mean to offend anyone who is a regular Second Lifer) From what I have read, people have relationships, the whole works (if you know what I mean...... )
Supposedly (if you believe everything you read) it is going to be how we start to use the internet.
I am still trying to get my head around why real life businesses are getting involved.

What most people dont realise is how HUGE Second Life is. It is MASSIVE. There are nearly 10 million accounts registered with tens of thousands of people online at once. Thats the toughest bit to get around when you first start - where to go and what to do.

I went the free option - a mate of mine went the paid option. I will probably pay soon too.

As I am still fairly knew, I haven't actually gone looking for "real" companies though I am sure there are many on there - and yes, if I found something I liked I would buy it.

After reading your threads, I joined the freebie section, I am a little confused with it all, but it looks exciting......

Thanks Turbo and Eswife for your input.
I am still finding my way around in there too.
Do you guys have favourite destinations in there yet??

If anyone else has any feedback, it would be much appreciated. Both positive and negative. I have 8,000 words to write, so need all the input I can get. :D
