Both are correct, if the dust oxygen mix is correct then it will be eplosive, if it's slightly off then it just burns very very quickly. Hence why strictly no smoking in and around grain bins. Unless you're stupid like some of the guys I used to work with who did.Markmywords wrote: Fire in a grain elevator.
If im correct i think grain dust can be explosive or highly flamable when exposed to certain things ?

[chemistry lesson]
Wheat and other grains contains matter that can burn (carbon based stuff like in wood). In the wheat form there's not enough exposed surface area for it to burn quickly. Grind it up and turn it into flour or a dust-like form the surface area increases which means more can burn, more rapidly. This makes it appear to explode - which really means it is burning super fast. It's like petrol - the vapour explodes (more exposed surface area) while the liquid (less surface area) doesn't.

Yeah, noticed the smoke a little bit ago also.. Haven't heard anything on the fire channel though. I heard the police mention a few mins ago theres a fire over around Armadale, but nothing else regarding fires.meg wrote:erk! Just looked up and saw the smoke!philby wrote:hey anyone got info on the fire in the hills?
