you will probaly need to call your shire rangers. They have the power to fine them. They normally have someone on call 24/7.

Always ring 000. The rangers generally prefer that the firies deal with it, and in our case we've had no luck getting the rangers to attend at all in these kinds of instances...

What meg says is correct. the ONLY number for reporting a fire, regardless of its size, is 000. If it warrants attendance by a ranger, the firies will arrange that themselves.

If of course the fire is legal and its just a smoke nuisance, then you can call the rangers directly. Local laws in relation to fire vary alot across the metro area still, sadly.. in some shires it is legal to burn garden refuse at night in small piles, even in summer, as long as the fire danger isnt very high or extreme..

Does a total fire ban mean no fireworks because somne "person" had fire works going off 30mins ago round the corner from me. Then head the VKI give out a job about fire works going off in my area.

Well it's illegal for people to have them anyway. Needs all sorts of permits etc. That's more a Police issue than anything.

If it is a bon fire with people in attendance and the fire is well and truly under control, call the shire ranger. Under Bush Fires Act 1954 an infringement of $250 can be issued if someone owns up to lighting the fire or to the property owner/occupier. What suburb is this happening in Mitch? If it's in my patch I could assist until our fire season finishes on 31st March.

FESA will tell you to ring Rangers/Police (if Rangers off-duty) if this is the situation.

Smoke Hazards are dealt with by Environment Health Officers from the council (not rangers).

In relation to fireworks:
BUSH FIRES REGULATIONS 1954 - REG 39E
Fireworks

39E . Fireworks

(1) For the purposes of section 27A(1)(a)(ii) of the Act, the use of fireworks on land and in the open air is a process likely to create a bush fire danger.

(2) A person shall not use fireworks on land and in the open air unless â€”
(a) all inflammable material on the ground within a radius of 3 metres of any lit fuse or lit firework has been removed;
(b) at least one fire extinguisher is provided at the place where the fireworks are being used; and
(c) if the fireworks are being used during prohibited burning times or restricted burning times, that person has given not less than 24 hoursâ€™ prior notice of the intention to do so â€”
(i) to the bush fire control officer for the district in which the place where the fireworks are being used is situated; and
(ii) where the place where the fireworks are being used is within 3 kilometres of forest land, to the forest officer in charge of that forest land.

(3) A bush fire control officer may, subject to the directions, if any, of the local government by which he was appointed, issue to a person using fireworks upon land referred to in subregulation (2), or the owner or occupier of that land, such directions as the officer considers necessary for the prevention of fire on that land and the person, owner or occupier, as the case may be, shall comply with those directions.

Our next door neighbours let them off with alarming regularity, even in summertime. We couldn't convince the rangers to come, FESA Comcen told us they wouldn't turn out a brigade unless we could actually see a fire, the police came and "had a word" two days later.

Yeah we have the same problem just down the highway from you. been going on for 2 years now and they havnt even had a visit

6A Section 24D Burning garden refuse when fire danger is extreme or very high $250

6C Section 24F Burning garden refuse during limited burning times $250

7 Section 25 Offences relating to lighting of fires in the open air $250

Can be an expensive fire. Always cheaper to take it to the tip
