Geraldton

Post by FG103 »

Hey guys,

I use a handheld Uniden unit with a extension connecting to an outdoor antenna. It does the job great here in Gero and can often pick up Perth frequencies for an hour or so but they fade out after that.

Was wondering if a base station scanner would do the job better picking up perth frequencies.

Hi FG103.

Receiving Perth frequencies from Gero is a pretty good feat. Unfortunately, it's not got a lot to do with your antenna, but rather the atmosphere. Under certain weather conditions (such as a tropospheric inversion) signals are 'trapped' in layers of air and can go much further distances than usual. The effect is only temporary and fades with the weather.

From Perth I've easily got to Bunbury and Busselton on UHF CB :-)

Yeah the end is near. Heard that Gero won't be going digital for some time to come. Will still be able to hear the boys calling for b/up at the local nightclub and plenty of pusuits. :)

Fair effort picking up Gero from Bunbury. What setup do you use?

Icom PCR1000 and Icom AH-7000 Discone and high quality coax.

Usually only takes a whiff of an inversion to start picking up signals from Geraldton and as inversions follow weather trough line, they start from the west when running up and down the coast and move east during the afternoon so Geraldton usually comes through here first anytime after lunch.

Also receive "The Spirit" Radio Station on 98.1 FM.
