Dunno. There was an episode of the force where some rural cops were doing a name check on a truckie and they did it using a sat phone, despite their vehicle having a HF whip on the back. Maybe that's the method they prefer these days?

In my experience (going back a few years now) 7660 was the 'primary' frequency.

Geraldton Police Base and Traffic Mobiles on Brand Highway come through to me loud and clear just using a discone during the day here in Bunbury on 7660Khz which would be around 700Km away i guess also Ravensthorpe Police.

I hear a lot a selcals going out 7660khz and 9053Khz but they don't always seem to connect with anyone.

I have'nt heard any traffic recently but South Australia Police used to be heard on 7800Khz.

When it comes to HF, distances that can be achieved vary greatly depending on time of day, weather conditions, ionosheric 'skip' and so on so it's hard to put a definitive figure on the range of the HF network.

Was just wondering what I might be able to pick up in Sydney :P. Sounds like I could get a bit of Vic or Qld, and maybe SA. Might be worth having a go at one of these days.

My old Uniden scanner is sitting in a box looking very sad at the moment, as I need to get a trunking scanner to listen to things over here, I miss not knwing what is happening with fires when I am not at station or in a truck.

Thought it time to start looking at a new scanner and thinking about what other scaning I could do...
