Automatic Number Plate Recognition

The implementation of ANPR units occurred inlate 2004. The WA Police Service presently hastwo units for enforcement. As referred topreviously, one unit has been placed with the‘Booze Bus’ operations and is in continuous useand the other unit is allocated to districts forspecial operations. ANPR equipment units have been named ‘Argus’ for operational use.
Google is your friend. This was the second search result from the search I performed. If you want to know why it was named, I think some more searching is required...
Yeah I searched and couldnt find. ARGUS does not stand for Automatic Number Plate Recognition, thats what it does.

Cheers CHEV4EVR! Now we all know...
Read the last line, this is from a Police Publication, and it states that Argus us the name given to the unit for operational use. ANPR stands fo Automatic Number Plate Recognition.

Possibly?

Argus
noun
1) Greek Mythology A giant with 100 eyes who was made guardian of Io and was later slain by Hermes.
2) An alert or watchful person; a guardian

Hopefully it's more to do with #2 than #1 :)
