I agree with RX, officers should get paid what miners do, to tell you the truth, they do alot more work...
What a load of crap! Mining is the toughest job going. You call working in 40 degree heat, wearing an ice vest, risking injury from faulty machinary, worrying about the long term effects of some of the chemicals you work with easy?

Not to mention seperation from family and loved ones?

The coppers deserve more, but saying that Police work is harder than mining is garbage champ.
Yea maybe more physically difficult, but not psychologically... i was a driller, started as an offsider and worked my way up, and it was the easiest money i have ever made, anyone can drill holes, pretty mind numbing stuff actually... yea fair enough there's the 40 degree heat, but we also get 40 degree heat in perth...whats the difference??

Risk from faulty machinary?? yea sure you could get injured, but only if you are cutting corners and not following Safe Working Procedures

Long term effects from chems?? Thats what Personal Protective Equipment is designed for..

I agree with the speration from loved ones, but coppers get the same deal, long hours, stress of the job, bring that home every night...at least whem mining, as soon as your on that plane heading home, you forget about everything.....

Ok off my soap box now

I was not saying that mining aint tough mate...i am merely making the point that miners are justly rewarded for the efforts and dangers they face , and so should police be.
The mining industry is lucky to have had a strong union influence that has used industrial actions to secure what are now expected standards and conditions for the workers. Our police should be afforded the same right to protest when they feel unjustly dealt with.

coming from another angle,

I work in the private sector and we employed a guy for 6 weeks who is from the UK, an ex-copper and ex-NHS fraud manager.

He's just resigned from here to start up with the WA Police. Unfortunately the company I work for, for whatever reason, only employed him for 6 weeks and have kind of decided they want him as the Manager, but because they only employed him for such a short time, he had to keep looking and BAM, he's in the next recruitment course.

It's bad for the area I work in, but good for the WA Police as from what I've seen him do in the past 6 weeks, he will be a missed asset for where I work.

Yeh ofcourse, Telling a mother that her 17 year old child has just passed away because he was doing 170kph is easy as to do... Risking your life at every job... and the long term metal effects. Working all hours of the day and night and on public holidays...

Did you perhaps mean to say "those"?

A question.

How much should we pay Police Officers (They actually are not officers, most only have basic high school education).
$90000 p/a
$100000 p/a
$150000 p/a

What do you think is a fair salary for a person doing Police work?
And how would you justify that?

How much should we pay a miner......I would say less than a Police Officer.

It takes allot of brains to work on a mine site!

They actually are not officers, most only have basic high school education).

I dont really get what you mean by this, are saying that Police Officers are stupid?? They hold the office of Constable so therefore........they are officers.

Regardless of their Education they ALL hold or will hold a Diploma in Public Safety (Policing)...correct me if im wrong.

Id say a fair wage for a Police Officer would be 20% above what they are getting now!!!

The word "Officer" is a Military term and requires an education at Duntroon along with degrees in relevant disciplines along with soldiering aquired along the way. You really cannot argue with that.

The title of constable is not an office.

Correct me if I am wrong, a 20% pay increase equates to around 62k p/a,
for an average Police person?

Please appreciate that Lawyer after 5 years of university, and after aquiring a minimum of two degrees, plus an aditional one year of articles, and after five years working in law at an average family law firm, working 65 hours per week, would most probably earn around 65k p/a, sometimes 75k. Not to mention also having a far higher than average TEE score. And Police expect us to pay them similar amounts?

Aquiring an LLB is only one example. Do not get me started on Medicine for hard work!

Perhaps if they feel the deserve more pay etc, join the ADF and try to make the rank of Major or become a Geologist.

All in good fun my friend, in this day and age, we Joe public want bang for our buck.

You clearly fail to understand there is more to a wage than what education you have.

You views are far too simplistic, not to mention hypocritical.

Most mine workers are paid more than your precious lawyers, and many have little to no formal tertiary education.

In mine workers case the high wage is driven by the location of the work and the short supply of them.

Currently there is high demand for police, there is the requiment for 2 years in a country town, also there is the poor working conditions and the significant risk associated with the job too. Not to mention the shift work, often the lack of a lunch break, and the significant overtime.

These are all clear factors that in any other industry would drive the pay up to $60k a year.

I have just finished a 4 year degree, I have no problem with police getting paid more than I do upon graduation, I don't have to deal with dangerous situations.

I'll second that, Kinetic... My job involves lots of responsibilities and abuse, but nowhere near the abuse the officers get on a day to day basis, plus we call them when it gets too bad so they can help us out. I'm quite happy to get less than them even though I've done a 3yr degree :)

Trust me i cop a lot of abuse in my job and i don't mind saying that the police do deserve a higher wage because they go out everyday to risk their lives to protect ours :smt108

MMmmmm.....better check your definitions under the criminal code. Once again sprouting off will get you no where without backing up your facts. I'll make it easy for you....sec 318 and then go to the interpretation section ;)

How many lawyers get spat on and bashed/kicked after all their 'training'. Bugger all..... too busy working 10am till 4pm.

How much action does an officer in the army see? bugger all compared to a copper at the coal face dealing with danger everyday.

Thankyou Walks.........

Stick to the mining game mate........

People don't generally join the Police for the money...on a day to day basis being a Police office would be allot more personally rewarding than being a miner or a ADF Officer.

I would ask you to spend a week as a Police Officer on the front line, then see if you opinion is the same. No disrespect for any occupation but Police do a bloddy hard job and should get paid a reasonable wage to do it.

My two cents.

Mmmm Lawyers, I thought most of these worked in assisting crims in court and trying to reduce the level of punishment...

And only after the cops have arrested them...

No blood on their hands.

Oh thats right they work in civil, testate, family law etc.etc.

Now how many have been physically assaulted sitting behind a desk :?: :?:

More on this today....

"He said the British recruits weren't the only police officers looking for greener pastures. Since January, 207 police officers had resigned and some had retired."
