All antennas are metal, the main differences are in size, height and type.JG-103 wrote:see my post called must have metal antenna,
A base station scanner antenna (has to be a base station one if it's going on a house roof, most antennas are meant to be bolted to a flat piece of metal, like a car roof) even on top of your TV antenna mast will increase the range of signals you'll be able to receive.
I'd say from most suburbs you should be able to recveive at least one channel on every police district in Perth with a decent outdoor antenna.

This is the antenna I used at my parents house for years. It's not all that high but it made all the difference!
And after I got my ham radio license, the foxtel dish provided a very nice place to put another antenna

Nah. Not really. As I said the standard antennas that most scanners come with are unbelievably poorJG-103 wrote:What i meant by metal was a pure metal antenna, no rubber covering on it, from my results, metal does better than the rubber antenna, maybe cause the rubber can prevent some of the weaker frequencies or something, do you know ?

Check the manual. Does it look like a BNC but screws in instead of 'twists'? If so, it's probably a TNC connector and adapaters are available.JG-103 wrote:Gav, i have a uniden 57xlt and it only has a screw in type antenna jack and i havent seen any that dont hav a BNC type jack. So what can i do about getting a better antenna other than to sell my scanner and buy one with a BNC jack ???? Really appreciate it if you can help me

in the manuel it just says screw in type, thats all. I was thinkin of gettin a 5/16" male piece, that way i can screw one end into my scanner and the other into the female end of a base antenna

I did a bit of a Google on the UBC57 to see if there was anything about the antenna. Couldn't find anything after a very quick look.vk6hgr wrote:Don't suppose you can take a photo of it?JG-103 wrote:in the manuel it just says screw in type, thats all.
