VKI police Communication

This will be the first of a series of posts. Yes there is change afoot with WA police communications. Currently if you are in the Perth CBD area, Kings Park and surrounds you might happen to see officers carring a different radio from the usual GP-339 portables. The new radios are the Motorola XTS5000. These are currently configured for the following operation:
1. Digital
2. Analog
3. Combined

The WA Police is currently testing thier new system using the XTS-5000 in the digital mode. How ever they are presently keeping backward capability with their present system, to allow other units full communication with the DIGITAL units. This is switched thru at VKI Midland.

Once this initial testing stage is completed it is expected that the system will come online Feb 2007. Once the digital network is online, the WAPOL will keep approximately 30 channels in the current UHF band for backward compatability with PD's from interstate, Military Units, Special Organisations CH65 and CH66 as well as country WAPOL units who visit the metro area.

Once the new system is online the WAPOL will be shifting frequencies into the low 500MHz prob 500-520 MHz. The new system will be digital and will be encrypted using DES encryption. There will be 13 different keys in use. To change the encryption the WAPOL will be using OTAR (Over the Air Rekeying). When using OTAR the system encrypts the first key, and then encrypts the encrypyed key a second time (Good luck breaking this one :D ).

In the event that the radio is lost/stolled there are a number of options that can be implimented.

1. Single channel transmission. This will be on channel 24 direct to VKI.

2. STUN: This will allow the radio to switch on, but the display will be blank

3. KILL: The radio is now useless. It will have to be wither returned to WAPOL or Motorola to be given a new life.

Stay tuned as I gain further information I will post it here.

Would I be correct in saying that you are a police officer and giving us the heads up. If that is the case, thanks for the info :D
