To any of you community minded people that may be interested in a new career.

FESA just advertised for its latest round of Trainee Firefighter positions, details can be found at www.fesa.wa.gov.au.

I have been told it is not as hard to get in as it used to be and not as many people are applying as once did.

Good luck.

Cheers and beers.

Not as hard ? how so ?

you do the initial application..

1.) all in black pen.
2.) all hand written.
3.) 200 word assignment about your motivation to join, family history and your background.
4.) Include 8 passport photo's
5.) 1 original and 3 additional copies of the application.
6.) application must be stapled only on the top left hand side with a single staple per copy.
7.) must be submitted in a business envelope with the words " Confidential - Job Application - Fire Fighter Recruitment "
8.) boxes must be X not a Tick.
9.) national police clearance certificate is required.
10.) senior first aid is required.
11.) HR truck licence is a requirement ( unrestricted - crash box )
12.) a copy of all education / trade qualifications must be certified and included.
13.) 3 personal references and 1 professional reference is required for contact.

I've got past the first stage, my written exams are this sunday at UWA at 1pm - if I pass, then I go to my psych testing and if successful, I will undertake my beep test, claustrophia testing, stamina testing and height anxiety testing before being reviewed by a panel of selectors.

The beep test is a level 9.6 aparently, and that's just HUGE ! - I'm training 5 nights a week, and I'll be pushing so hard to get a 9.6 - I'm prepared to go out screaming to get to it..

I don't see how it's any easier than in the past ?

It's far more rigorous than joining the armed forces - their entry criteria is far lower..

G'day eukanuba,

Best of luck with your application. The application forms are a test in themselves to see if you can carry out instructions..I bet if you did it in blue pen they'd file your application in the shredder..

Beep test you will find is a bit easier when you have other applicants running along you, the motivation factor is huge..

I once ran 10.6 in the beep test now I reckon I'd be lucky to get level 2.1!!

The firies I saw at FESA HQ on Monday were such fit looking dudes (and not in a gay way either  )...

Best of luck, keep us posted

Eukanuba,

Can I suggest that you get hold of a copy of the beep test and do some training with it. Like Tom said you will find it easier on the day, but knowing how fast you have to run on each level helps.

The trick is not to go out too hard too early, and best of luck with you application mate.

Cheers
Browney

Tom, we only have the 1 scania and 1 light tanker..

but occasionally when the scania goes offline to workshops, we get other's.. I've got quite a few pics - but that's all I had at the time when doing the website..

I really have to get around to revamping it and putting fresh pics up now..

I've been in exams for my FESA entry all day today, so I'm glad that's over..

Dazla - I do have a copy of the beep test, and I'm testing myself weekly to note the improvement in my ability ( and so is my trainer ) - I will know in about 3 week's if my testing today was successful and if I'll progress onto the next stage of confined space testing and height anxiety and beep testing..

My trainer is using me as his pet project - " Taking an unfit bastard and turning him into a 9.6 level running machine " hehehehe :o

Good on you mate, best of luck.

When I say its a bit easier, I thin they dont have the same numbers and quality of applicants that they had back in 2002 when they started recruiting.

aparently they work on a bell curve with the successful applicants being the best of that years intake..

I think I went alright now, looking back on it - there was lots of mechanical reasoning, the maths was pretty basic stuff.. ( not super basic, but should be able to do in your head stuff ) - I heard a couple guys chatting outside saying that " I couldn't do it without a calculator " so that made me feel a bit better..

Then there was the 200 or so questions about your personality.. and your ability to manage teams.. there seemed to be lots of questions about " If someone near you is upset, you also feel their pain " sd, d, n, a, sa.

( SD - Strongly Disagree )
( D - Disagree )
( N- Neutral )
( A - Agree )
( SA - Strongly Agree )

I also laughed at this one " You've looked at erotic or provocative literature " bwhahahahahaha

now, that depends - I did read ralph and FHM a couple times - but the wife banned them from the house because she thinks they're porn - so does that count ?
