Mobile Phone blitz on 63
Gday All,
I heard some radio traffic on ch 63 in my travels on Friday around 1300.
Sounds like they were doing an undercover op on people using mobile phones while driving.
Every now and again a guy would say something along the lines of
"Theres a blue such and such car rego xxx-yyy the drivers got the phone glued to his right ear and hes not wearing a seatbelt"
I got the impression that there was an observer and the other guy doing the pulling over, the radio traffic seemed mainly one way with the observer directing this other guy as to what car and where and what they were doing wrong.
Dont know if anyone else heard it

I am led to believe that here in WA it is against the law to not have both hands on the steering wheel at all times unless changing gears or signalling.
Technically this includes changing radio stations, holding a drink, or doing anything else that doesn't involve safe driving.
That is however what I am led to believe.

I doubt very much that the law says that. That excludes ALOT of legitimate reasons to not have both hands on a steering wheel - and if that was the case, a law to prohibit the use of a handheld mobile phone whilst driving would not have been needed.hitman wrote:I am led to believe that here in WA it is against the law to not have both hands on the steering wheel at all times unless changing gears or signalling.

I refer to 2 or 3 stories I have seen on the current affairs shows where drivers have been booked when changing a radio station.Fastlane wrote:I doubt very much that the law says that. *shrugs* "I am led to believe" ... so lead me to believe something else
I think the offence would be 'Careless Driving', i cant find anything in the Road Traffic Act under Reckless or Dangerous Driving that says that if you are not 100% focused that you can be charged....but im not an expert
Road Traffic Act 1974, Part V, Division 1
Section 62 Careless Driving: Every person who drives a motor vehicle without due care and attention commits an offence.
Penalty: 12 PU.

A car can be a deadly if it is not handled safely. If you’re handling a gun you would not be eating or talking on you mobile phone would you?
I tell you I was following this driver one day on Kalamunda Rd they were not talking on the phone but SMSing while driving, changing gears and was not doing a good job staying within their lane either, everyone was giving them the evil looks. If the car in front had to make an emergency stop they would have plowed into them as they were looking down at their phone for a good 2sec at a time.
You should see how they drive over in Germany on the Autobahn now thats nice
EDIT - I took weapon out as that not quite the word I should use.
