Travelling abroad

Hi all. Just wanting to pick everyone's brains
I am an overseas virgin, and I am heading to Phuket and Bangkok next month. I have just completed the passport process (omg how expensive is it!) and am wondering if anyone on the forum has been there, or has any tips.
I'm extremely nervous, as my overseas experience thus far has been to Rottnest.

I will be going with two girlfriends who have travelled abroad before but none of us have been to these places before.
Any hints, suggestions or 'do not do's' for our trip?
Cheers
Chicky

Take an almost empty suitcase Chicky, so you have room for bargains to bring home. Try not to star on Border Patrol on your way back in!
Have a great time.

Oh boy... pingpong

As for the budgies, nah I'll pass thanks. Suitcase sorted, thanks RJ. Hey, I'll make sure I'm wearing a WARSUG shirt on my way back in just in case i get a cameo on Border Patrol

Stick to bottled water and be cautious of the ice in your drinks...

Unless your waving at the camera with one of those "Hello" posters you see at the footy

Agree on the price of your tuk-tuk journeys before you get in... dont stop to "help" anyone fill out a quick survey...and Turbo`s advice re ice in drinks is very good advice though most big hotels and restaurants are pretty good these days but beware of it in smaller places.
Most of all just relax , dont be in a hurry to get anywhere , smile at everyone.. they love that and you`ll have a great time , the thais are beautiful people.

Go and see your local GP in regards to any injections that you may have to get before travelling....
Also it may be a good idea to take some anti-nausea /anti-gastro medication, just incase you do get a little "Bangkok-Belly" ( Don't forget to declare.)

Store money in things like old film canisters, crooks don't want heaps of pictures of someone's holiday, or film they want money, they'll over look it...mainly in hotel rooms.

Spoke too a tourist today from thailand at the event i'm photographing at:
she gave me three tips for thailand and the rest of SE asia
1) be very wary of your back, people may follow you and take your money
2) keep away from driving on your own, if you break down (especially on country roads) no one will stop and help
3) already mentioned but... the water is not the cleanest but bottled water is generally OK, the cheap sticker labels on bottled water is just one that the shop has poured itself; always check the seal
ENJOY

There's a 7-11 on every street corner and 600ml water is under 30c Au. Every hotel gives you 2 free bottles of water each day and as for ice, its all safe as its such big business no one makes there own.
