I believe unless they have the correct qualifications, then yes. The Police have the experience and know-how to deal with traffic more than a try hard in a veedub. If he had the qualifications to deal with this kind of thing then I wouldn't mind, but he certainly should not be listening to his scanner for accidents, then rocking up at them, he is putting not only his own life, but other road users and emergency service personnel at risk as well. I can't wait to see someone do something about this.

While i dont think it should be illegal to attempt to direct traffic in an emergency in which your involved or see i do believe acting on ANY information heard over the scanner to put your life in danger, not only this anyone driving past assumes he knows what he is doing and will follow his instructions, which can be dangerous if indeed hes just some john doe who has no life.

The fact that he has dedicated his own vehicle and his time to doing this and has displayed evidence on this forum that he hasnt investigated the rules and regulations regarding his chosen volunteer work (Ambers on private vehicles) i have some doubts as to whether or not he has the common sense to provide a safe and legal service to the community.

Should it be illegal for a member of the public to direct traffic in an emergency? No

Should it be illegal to kit out a vehicle for the sole purpose of chasing scanner calls to provide such a service without permission ftom the dpi? Definately

Hmmm jmmw I think you have hit the nail on the head there.

If he did an accredited course and had approval, I wouldn't mind him acting on scanner info (similar to towies) as someone who knows what they are doing is better than no-one.... or worse - someone who doesn't know what they are doing!

Imagine doing points and actually causing a fatal accident!

Be a volunteer - but be accredited!

He should at least be accredited, for example private Pilots that escort "OVERSIZE" vehicle are trained and licenced to control traffic. It would be like a Pilot stopping at an accident and directing traffic, I would not have a problem with this at all.

Saying that I delt with some pilots out there that could'nt direct traffic in a bloody shoebox.

Omg... well I didn't believe it until I saw it, and now I have. Thanks truckie for the footage. IMHO, that looks completely unprofessional AND like all the gear has been pilfered from various places along one's travels  I'm in complete agreeance with accreditation in regards to scenes like this. Dangerous not only to self, but others. I'm perturbed by it all to say the least!

Judging by the difference between them all (big/small/reflective/solid/old/new) i would say he taxed them.
