Newer anti-hoon laws?

Heard on the radio but missed the news about the introduction of the new anti-hoon laws. I can't seem to find any more info, but I believe the greatest introduction is that members of the public can submit video as evidence.

So is there some wording on the changes made exactly somewhere? Thanks :)

Minister Kobelke's media release.

30/04/07

Tougher anti-hoon laws come into effect from midnight tonight.

Community Safety Minister John Kobelke said the new laws would give police the ability to act on public evidence showing hoon activity.

“From midnight tonight police will be able to impound an alleged hoon’s vehicle for two days in order to put an immediate stop to their anti-social behaviour,â€

Thanks, is there any specifics on if we have evidence, do we just go give it to our local station?

Well if I may add this info for you based on what i saw about it last night;

The general public now have the right to report hoons to Police - provided;

* They are willing to go to court
* Have credible evidence - such as;
- REGISTRATION OF VEHICLE
- CLEAN SHOT OF THE DRIVER
- DATE & TIME

The evidence must be clear and accurate - They must be able to see the Rego at least, and where possible shot of the driver's face or other passengers to identify.....

I think its a good idea, but also risky.... - I mean could you really risk fronting court - giving evidence "Yes he was doing burn outs out side my street" - don't you think his mates would be waiting for you after court??? Or go back to the street and camatose your car and home????

Perhaps if there is a way of protecting the person reporting it - such as Crimestoppers do?? - then maybe it will protect people who report this....

I mean - is there anyone on here who thinks its ok to hoon around and do burnouts?

well no one will ever get convicted if members of the public are to scared to stand up to them, people will get away with everything if the public dont grow some balls and stand up to the thugs

Clean shot of the driver? Umm... why? If they don't need to identify the driver for multanova photographs anymore, why doesn't the onus for hooning land at the feet of the owner of the car, just like it does for speeding?

I don't think Gav was having a go at you :)

I also believe getting that kind of evidence will be difficult. To get a clean shot of the driver, the plates etc you would almost have to be in there face. Most people don't have good enough equipment for that. Plus if they are 'hooning' then they are going fast, or producing smoke, which will obstruct vision. Numerous times I've seen cars doing standstill from behind, whilst I could record that I can't get every one of those details.

Excellent work by the crew of AO204 last night Northbound on the freeway around Thomas road saw the new legislation put to good effect. One knobjockey is now minus his white statesman after being clocked doing 193kmh in the 100 zone. Probably not really the attention he was seeking!

Also seems more calls are going out for people doing burnouts than usual and seems to be mroe people getting there car impounded, personally 48hrs isnt long enough or increase the fine.
