Pattio or tin roof as an antenna?

Has anybody yet tried to use their pattio roof as an antenna? I was thinking of trying to use my tin roof as one, i was gonna untie my antenna a little so some metal is showin, then hook up a piece of copper wire from it and connect it to the metal roof, hopefully i will be able to pick up some more frequencies as i live on a bit of a hill. So has anybody else tried this? I would presume it would also work if you had a metal flag pole, depending on the height, scape some paint away so as it connects and hey presto, a big antenna

Generally, for frequencies above 30Mhz or so it won't work well at all. Back in the 27Mhz CB days I used to transmit into the gutters for fun but an antenna for the band is definately the way to go.

Patios are useful as ground planes for vertical antennas that are meant to be bolted onto cars, though.

So does that mean i should listen to me hand held under me patio to get better reception sorta thing?

No, I mean if you put an antenna on top of the patio you'll get better reception. The antennas that handheld scanners come with are next to useless.

I tried my tin roof anyway, i took out the antenna and placed my scanner buttom up so as that round metal bit on top of the scanner ,where the antenna generally goes, on me tin roof and it worked, i picked up all my channels as clear as anything and still picked up Perth and channel 26. So the tin roof does work!!!

You guys are great thinkers and have come up with a great solution, too bad i don't have a tin roof.
