Priority pursuits

Last night at about 6pm there was a car chase in rockingham, i was listening to it on me trusty scanner and herd it was a priority 1 pursuit, which i have rarely heard before, the cop on the radio told vki that it was a priority 1 driver. Does this mean that the priority of a pursuit can be determained by the driver of the other car (along with all the other factors- conditions, traffic etc)? Just wonderin cause normally all pursuits are only priority 2. Thanks

Dear JG-103,
I've been talking to a friend in the Police Service, and they said that chase was related to an armed hold up which took place somewhere in Rockingham and was considered armed and dangerous.
But to answer your question, No - the priority 1 isn't issued for driver, it comes down to what crime he committed, so if this guy was trying to escape police with a confirmed sighting of a firearm, then they use the Priority 1 to catch him at all costs.
Priority 2 pursuits are for typical things, for running red-lights, evading Police from a breakin, theft, stuff like that. Priority 1 usually means that police feel a Extreme threat to the public and themselves if they don't take the all out extremes of catching this guy. A great example would be the guys that escaped from the Supreme Courts - On the Kwinana Freeway, a Priority 1 was issued to all pursuing cars to stop them.
hope this helps.

Is Pri1 and Pursuit the same thing, or is Pursuit a higher level again than Pri1?

Priority 1 can be tighed in with a Pursuit - you'll sometimes hear it on air.
