Just found this article on Perth Now... What do you all think about this? I think its a shame - so much time and money spent on recruiting from overseas when there are hundreds here willing to put in 110% to get into our force and then this happens. Hmmmm...

It seems a crying shame that miners get paid what police officers should.

I just want to know why it is necessary to go this far - the overseas recruitment. We have the same problem in my nursing profession - half of all our staff are from over there and they are really nice people, but there are so many trying to get into all services that are locals, that have family here, that are willing to work hard to get in - and they're not given a helping hand e.g. the cost of uni, the free labour, no assistance to get to placements in the country areas etc. I did it - and thank God I had someone to support me seeing I was a mature age student. But what about all the younger ppl - ones who study and work and slog it out so hard to get nothing at the end? It just frustrates me that the government is putting so much time/effort into this and there are many knocking on doors for help that are shut tight

Ive actually just left my job in mining, earning 90 odd K a year to come back to Perth and hopefully join WAPOL....the pay rates dont really bother me, its just something i really want to do..on the other hand, i can see where serving officers are coming from..
I agree with RX, officers should get paid what miners do, to tell you the truth, they do alot more work...

What a load of crap! Mining is the toughest job going. You call working in 40 degree heat, wearing an ice vest, risking injury from faulty machinary, worrying about the long term effects of some of the chemicals you work with easy?
Not to mention seperation from family and loved ones?
The coppers deserve more, but saying that Police work is harder than mining is garbage champ.

Yeh ofcourse, Telling a mother that her 17 year old child has just passed away because he was doing 170kph is easy as to do... Risking your life at every job... and the long term metal effects. Working all hours of the day and night and on public holidays...

That's not what my mining buddies say, who say they get paid shitloads for what they do.

I hear what you are saying, Trent. I actually left a mining job as a fitter/machinist to become a qualified nurse - and yes, same thing, I wanted to do it, something I've always wanted to do. Its not all about the money... It takes a special type of person to want to help others.

How many sieges, criminals, domestics, fights, druggies, speeders, car chases, burglaries, mental heads etc. etc. do miners deal with...NONE
Miners work with machines that can be fixed altered whatever, NOT PEOPLE...
While I respect your opinion, you really have gone out on a limb on this one, champ.

Thanks chris... Was hard work though had to be as good as if not better than the boys to fit in. Hated the heat, but loved the work. Still do the odd machining job from time to time - cashies
