Neighborhood Speed Watch

Found this while searching round the internet and I feel might be one of the ways the general public might be able to help out in the fight to save lives on the roads.

From web site , http://www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/Engineeri ... cInfo.aspx
Neighborhood Speed Watch

The Neighborhood Speed Watch Program is a public awareness program in which concerned citizens can take an active role in solving the program of speeders in their own neighborhoods. Through the program, citizens check out a radar unit from the Police Department. Speeds and license numbers of cars traveling in excess of speed designations are recorded and returned with the radar unit. The registered owners of those vehicles on the list are sent a confidential courtesy letter from the City asking them to reduce their speeds. The letters are not citations, but reminders about the posted sped and the community's concern for safety. The City of Hillsboro requests that citizens who have concerns regarding vehicle speeds participate in the program before advancing to the second phase of this process.

There are quite a few places in the US that already do The Neighborhood Speed Watch Program, maybe it could be considered here like Neighborhood Watch.

What do you all think?

Yes, this would work! I would be in that for sure! I have at least 6 ppl who speed up and around our small cul-de-sac when my children are playing out the front. And I swear that at times they must be doing at least 100km/hr just for the thrill of us shouting at them slow the f*** down... It makes me angry that I have to keep the kids in the back yard because of them when all they want to do is kick the footy in some space of which there's plenty in our normally QUIET street...
Just my 2 cents

This reminds me of the City of Melville ones that appear every now and again around the place. Big display board on a trailer chained to a pole somewhere in suburbia.

To watch the amount of 'drivers' who speed up to see what they can get the display up to was amazing.

Why? Cause there were no consequences for the act. I fear that this program might have the same effect being that a 'courtesy' letter is worth fark all to some people.

Just make sure you don't stand outside your own house when you're doing it, you're likely to get a brick through your window in the middle of the night!

Ever heard of road rage?

Also got this email some time ago in regards people observed speeding using speed detection equipment.

"Keith

many thanks for your email the other day about speeding vehicles.

Unfortunately this is a common problem, around the state.

In reference to your speeders unless you can supply us with a corroborating witness, and both of you are prepared to go to court if required, we do not take any further action, because the other party will never admit guilt, unless confronted with good evidence. There is also a lot of research out now which indicates giving cautions on traffic offences does not change driver behaviour.

The East Metro District does have an active Traffic Branch of some 34 Officers who are responsible for traffic enforcement within the district, and the area where you detected the offender is patrolled on a regular basis by our Officers.

We also encourage the community to attend court if required where there is supporting evidence to an offence.

I thank you for taking the time to report this matter.

The reason I emailed him was I clocked a car 145kph in a 70 zone on Ocean Reef RD one night. Scared the shit out of me because it came out of no where.
