I was there.
I was driving down high road when I saw smoke pouring out the chimney, as I looked left I happened to see flames and thought Id better pull in and check it out.
Caught a whiff of the smoke and realised it wasnt just cooking, stuck my head in to the deli and theres 3 people standing there looking at the fire.
I asked em if theyed rang the fire brigade, they asked me if I could do ring the fire brigade, I told them to get out of the shop.
I rang 000 and gave them exact location.
By this time the fire alarm was ringing and IGA were evacuating the centre as smoke was starting to drift through.
I heard an extinguisher being discharged and it dawned on me that I have a 1kg dry powder extinguisher in my car, so I grabbed it.
I got to the door way of the kitchen and the whole fryer was engulfed in flames and i could feel the heat, so I said no way, the fire brigade are on the way, they can deal with it, im not here to play the hero.
I knew from my BFS and SES training that if anything I could have made the situation worse and also I may not achieve anything with my little extingusher on a large fire.
We all got out and Canningvale (I think) arrived after a few minutes.
I approached the S.O and told him the exact location of the fire and how to get in, then moved back into the crowd.
Just before FRS arrived these 3 people where standing at the entrance to the shop, so I suggested that they move well away so that FRS could get there hoses in.
Two men in BA with the hose reel and it was out within a few minutes
What a way to start the day

Thanks for that Mr G.
I was just a concerned passer by who used a bit of commonsense.
I have done extinguisher training before but Im a bit rusty and I knew if I stuffed up I could send a fire ball into my face....not pleasant.
Im guessing that theyll be closed for a few weeks till they repair the deep fryer.......Id love to know what causes a deep fryer to catch fire at 830 in the morning, Im thinking theyd just opened for trading...oh well

Thankyou Mr G
I appreciate your words of encouragement.
Like you I help out at T.A's etc but I dont have the same knack of being
in the right place all the time as you do
I
We were told in a situation like that u should chuck the fire extinguisher at the fire and run lol
I thought about that afterwards...may have worked
The firees might not have appreciated it if it blew up as they went in
It still amazes and amuses me that the 3 people that worked there were just standing there.....maybe they were in shock who knows
But thanks again for your compliments all, I appreciate it
