I was just cuious as to what people believe about Capital Punnishment with serious crimes, the reason i ask now and not when sophie sadly died in livingston, is i think we give better opinions when our bloods aren't boiling with rage
I realize people have strong opinions about this topic so ask that we all repect other peoples opinions and not get nasty

My personal opinion, with any crime, is that if you put yourself outside the boundary of the law, why do you feel you deserve it's protection, and the more serious the crime deserves more serious punishment.
Our legal system is far too soft. At one time incarceration was seen as a deterrent, nowadays civil libertarians and people if their ilk seem far more preoccupied in defending criminals' 'rights' and making excuses for them.
The end result, then, is seen in higher crime rates, lack of respect, and a former police FORCE turned into a police SERVICE.
Yeah it bugs the crap out of me.

Thanks Dave for putting that last comment in your original post. And thanks to everyone else who's responded so far in keeping things topical without getting personal

Now as for the question - yes I believe in capital punishment for certain very very serious crimes under certain circumstances.
One thing that does concern me though is the tendency of our governments (on all levels) to bring in a law to cover one situation, then slowly expand it a little at a time until it becomes something else entirely. If capital punishment were to be (re)introduced here, I'd want some pretty cast iron guarantees that this couldn't happen.
Finally, I also agree that sentencing seems to be on the soft side nowadays. I'd also prefer the sentences to be for punishment first (and protection of the rest of the community) and rehabilitation of the offender as a secondary goal. I feel that in a lot of cases the reverse is true.
Regards,

I think Capital Punishment should be for serious crimes like, serial killers, multiple homocides, and because there is no other SUCCESSFUL treatment it should apply to serial child molesters/rapists also. These people are the ones that will never stop offending otherwise.
I think somehow for the above extreme serious offences the offenders should "qualify" automatically for this punishment (certain convictions only), that is an instant punishment due to the crime set down in law as an aid to a judge.

I agree with GC101! Nothing better then locking them up and letting them suffer in a prison system! Though for some, it would be better then what they live at home with! But i think that Putting them down for serious offences should be an option aswell. At the discression of a Jury.

Capital punnishment, I say yes
The way our system is now, it isn't working. Serious crimes are increasing, yet no one in parliament is addressing this issue seriously.
If we can afford to run a referendum to how many days a week we can shop, why can't we hold a referendum for capital punnishment.
I say that parliment is scared. Scared that it will backfire against them, cost them an election.
If your wife/husband, sister/brother, daughter/son any close family member or friend was murdered, raped would you want them to live in tax payed accomodation, I wouldn't
Having said this I do understand how capital punnishment can backfire, eg.Wrongful conviction...i guess the other question is whether it's worth the risk

I don't believe any person has the right to take the life of another. We're all here for a reason, and yes some people do horrible things to others, but I believe divine justice will prevail in the end.
