You actually get a hourly bonus for the Shift work. You may also be eligable to get travel allowance for afternoon/night shift. It depends on where you live and what public transport is available.

Im on lever 2 shift work currently and you do get abit over the listed amount. Depending how your shifts are structured

You also get an extra weeks leave per year and extra sick days.

I am about to change positions up to a level 3 shiftworker (all things being equal) and hopefully a decent pay increase :)

If you're thinking about going for it, I can reassure you that the Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency (it's a 'desirable' criteria for this job) is not difficult to attain. I did a course as an external student of Challenger TAFE some years ago but only sat the exam in 2004. It's multiple choice - you get the picture. It only requires a basic knowledge of radio propagation and procedure, and you can buy the text from the Australian Maritime College website.

Sweet, well I'm ex-Navy so it's kind of second nature anyway. Sorting the paperwork out today and throwing it in the mail.

Yes you still need the MROCP to operate VHF (in fact there's a VHF-only certificate too) but I've heard there's a fair few people using VHF who don't have it. Prosecutions are unlikely: the authorities are happy knowing people are using radio on their boats to increase safety, which is fair enough.
