Man fatally shot by police had criminal record, mental illness
Police have confirmed that a man who was fatally shot by an officer in Perth last night had a criminal record and a mental illness.
The 31-year-old man was in a car being chased by police and crashed through the fence of the house where he lived with his parents.
The man went inside, got a knife and used it to stab a 41-year-old police officer; the officer then shot the man dead.
Neighbours have reported hearing four shots.
Police Assistant Commissioner Wayne Gregson says an investigation into the shooting will consider the dead man's mental health.
"The extent to which that mental illness, if any, had any bearing on the incident is yet to be thoroughly investigated," he said.
The policeman who was stabbed remains in hospital.
Today was to be his last day in his current role, before moving to forensics.

I think the officer made the right decision and the offender made a bad one even with his state of health.

4 shots

So what if he had a criminal record....I know a few people who have minor criminal records, does that really make them bad people????? Piss weak reporting by the WA media outlets as usual.
If they are gonna make such statements about the 'victim' (sorry but the victim in my eyes here was the copper concerned) they should be able to back them up with further facts to justify this comment..e.g. was his criminal record for violence etc? If it was for stealing a packet of sweeties 5 years ago I can't see the relevance in releasing this info to the public.

Record or no record if someone was running at me with a knife and I was the officer I would shoot the person not 4 times tho. I like how the media try to use things such as the criminal record and the fact the person had a mental illness to justify the reason behind the shooting. Did the person desevere to be shot? I would say yes, Would the officer had knowen at the time time the person had a mental illness? probably not. If you had some one running at you with a knife would and you had acess to a gun would you shoot the person? Probably yes. So the fact the person had the record and mental illness to me is not releveant to the situation. I know some members said he should have been tazzored and from mememory it has been discussed in these forums before not all officers have the tazzor yet.

ah been away for a week and its good to see that nothing has changed around the place.
Don't think anyone really has the right to comment unless they were either there or know the facts.
Yet again the site steps away from its primary subject of scanning....

Youve got a pretty good point ludacris... but i fear it is now the way of the world as we hear less and less and eventually nothing from WAPOL. All that will be left is speculation on what people have observed themselves or heard in the media and the varying opinions that are spawned from this speculation. In the end though the kind of robust discussion that goes on in this forum probably serves to open the readers minds to other points of veiw that they may not have considered , who knows , they may even learn something.

I know I have a pretty good point

Why should WAPOL tell people what happened, its no ones business apart from those involved and those investigating. Just sit and listen and be happy with that, you all hear more than the average person anyway.....

I'm sorry guys but if you get a knife driven into you or your partner, all bets are OFF !!
Not everyone has a TAZAR and the firearm is there for a reason.. The main aim of the game is to go home to your family at the end of your shift.. It isn't some Hollywood game...

No Police Officer joins the job to be injured - whether that be from a punch, to be spat at from someone with Hep C in the face OR STABBED. Police officers join to protect the community, and no police officer WANTS to engage with lethal force. However, every officer wants to go home at the end of the night to their family. THAT is their right. They are here to protect YOU and your family.
Police officers have the right to use lethal force when lethal force is used against them. A knife equates to lethal force. By stabbing an officer this deceased member of our community has communicated his intent, ability, means and taken the opportunity, to which the officer has responded with lethal force.
Whether or not the offender has a criminal record, or mental condition makes no difference to that particular situation.
It takes an offender who is 10m away just a couple of seconds to cover that 10m and utilize their weapon. Police officers are required to be able to draw and fire in under 2 secs. This offender was much closer than 10m, which is how the officer has been injured.
There are not to many idiots that take on an officer with lethal force - why, because at the end of the day, every officer is given the right to carry lethal force to protect him / herself, AND the community.
If you want all officers to carry Tazers, than lobby the state government for more funds.
Every one has the right to an opinion, but the only correct opinion is the one of the officer who engaged with lethal force at the time. It comes down to his perception.
Oh, one other thing, it is a well known fact, that in times of extreme duress officers have very little recollection of firing their weapon, let alone how many shots they have fired. Again, officers are taught to engage to stop the threat.

Reading the West this morning jogged my memory about what i heard prior to the incident. Was approx about 5-10 mins before the vehicle failing to stop call in from GW 102 that i heard a job being read out from VKI. Was a call out to a skate park, call come from some kids. They reported a suspicious person wearing a sun visor, some color t shirt (i think green) and wearing a towel. Shortly after was the vehicle failing to stop and then the shooting.
Was very strange listening to the officer call in to VKI in distress, it reminded me of COPS the TV show when they had recordings of officers calling in when they got shot and needed urgent backup. VKI was very calm and collected through the whole ordeal still dealing with other jobs around the city and trying to organise this major job. He must have had nerves of steel to work so calmly when everyone adrenaline would have been going through the roof. A job well done VKI.

In the perfect world the officer would have had access to a taser and would have had time to decide to utilise it.
I think the officer was right in using his gun to defend himself and i can definately understand how he would have let off 4 shots, with a semi-automatic it takes about a second and a half to let 4 shots off, in the middle of a life & death situation you really don't think to let off one shot then check the offender then let off another. During that second and a half you couldnt care less about the offender because in the last 5 seconds the offender has charged your partner, your partners falling backwards into a pool and now hes after you!
Check this video out alot more then 4 shots are fired and here none of the officers have a knife in their shoulder

Good to see after not visiting this site for a while that things haven't changed for a number of people.
Yet again everybody knows how to do the job better than the police. Seems to be a popular trend in the community these days. I bet you guys don't tell your doctor how he should operate on you or give advice to ambos about how to perform CPR.
I think this thread was interesting while the events were unfolding as this is what the site is all about but par for the course it has degenerated into a slanging match. What happened has happened and the last thing the world needs more of is "Monday Morning Quarterbacks."
Uninformed opinions and suppositions are the gambit of people with small minds with no concept of how the real world works.
Yes it is an interesting subject but the "scanner" part of the event has finished now and I can't even see how some of these posts are relevant to this site. If you want to offer your opinion on the actual events go have a sook on the Oprah website, they love a good cry there.
