Re: VMRS discussion
I will kick this off
If you jump on the FESA website under the VMRS section, it will give you the operating channels for the various sites in the state. Particularly this:
http://www.fesa.wa.gov.au/internet/uplo ... 2007_2.pdf
Also, I find this very worthwhile as it gives the frequencies corresponding to the channels above. It has some NZ frequencies on there but if you look on the bottom part of the page, VHF marine and 27meg channels are given and a brief (rough) allocation of channels on the right hand side.

Enjoy

Whitfords Sea Rescue is not affiliated with FESA, 'nor are Freo Sea Rescue (neither are part of VMRS).

how did they manage thatchopper wrote:Whitfords, Fremantle and Cockburn are out on their own (don't get funding from FESA). They formed the Metropolitan Volunteer Sea Rescue Group a few years ago.
Yorky, not qualifications required - all on the job training.

Re: VMRS discussion
A radio operator should have at the minimum a Restricted Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency before they can work the VHF or HF (not 27 mHz) marine radio.

It is seriously temptingchopper wrote:Hi all,
Whitfords Sea Rescue are looking for volunteer radio operators to do at least 1 x 4 hour shift in their Operations Centre each month (more if you can assist). They will train you. You will handle vessels logging on and off, breaksowns, rescues, flare sightings, sinking, missing vessels, full scale search and rescues etc. You will work with Water Police, Air-Wing, SLSAWA, SES etc. All good fun and a great team of people.
This summer will be busy and any help is appreciated!
I've closed the door!

I contacted the manager of the marine rescue service. and he said there was no age requirement, but you need to live reasonabley close to the coast, and I live in wanneroo, wich is too inland.

Re: VMRS discussion
Albany Sea Rescue discourage the use of 27 meg and prefer VHF Marine
the issue is coverage
No age limit as far as I am aware I knew a bloke in his 70's as a VMRS radio op
If anyone is interested I am sure most volunteer units ( SES, BFB .. ) would jump at the chance to recruit a person for a radio operator, and I doubt that age is much of a factor
I know another chap in a BFB who is their radio op and he is in his 70's
I spent 2 days recently in the Stirlings with a chap ( 75 yrs ) on radios
I know another young lady with CP and has walking sticks who is a SES Base op
in short
Good radio people are hard to find
