Scrub Fire down Graham Farmer Fwy about 12pm-ish today
Water bombers, firefighters battle freeway fire

21st January 2008, 12:15 WST

Two aerial water-bombers have been sent to help control a scrub fire that is currently burning in vegetation close to Belmont Racecourse.

The fire, which is burning near the Windan Bridge, was reported just after 11am and has already burnt about four hectares that sit next to the Graham Farmer Freeway.

The fire had been contained about 12.30pm.

Smoke is billowing across East Perth and motorists have been urged to take alternative routes away from the Freeway and the Northbridge Tunnel.

Motorists in the area should keep their windows wound up and turn their air-conditioners off.

Five Fire & Emergency Services crews are also at the affected area with water-bombers called in because of the environmentally sensitive area that runs towards the Swan River.

It is believed that a cigarette butt may have caused the blaze which is expected to be under control shortly but will continue to smoulder for the next day or so.

I saw some smoke from the library - thought it was a bit closer than that though, East Perth/Highgate but my sense of distance is notoriously bad!

Was sent to this fire about 11:30 but wasn't big enough to be of interest to the ABC, just the scrub between Belmont Racecourse carpark and river near the Windan Bridge. Lots of smoke, not much fire. Saw Kensington pump and l/t and a second pump and l/t crew (Belmont??). Smoke at that stage was blowing across river towards old East Perth Power Station. Graham Farmer Fwy travelling freely. Channels 7,9 & 10 were all there filming, and the only chopper up was Ch 10s.

Maybe for you guys, but its been our busiest in years, with all the fires and the size of them in Parkerville. We got some statistics last night, from the big Parky fire, something like 190 drops of water from helitacks, adding up to around 330, 000 lts of water, also fire brigades from as far North as two Rocks, down to Bunbury came up to help us! And something like 2500 man hours from the BFB, plus all the hours form the FRS,Salvos, IMT and so on.
But apart from those fires, yes it has been quiet.

Hi All,
I been involved with the BFBoard & the BFService for 12 years now and can remember going to fire, that had no water bombers or helitaks support and the medium (the usual 24hr) sized fires would last for 3 day minimum. Yes Parky is probably going to be the corker for 2008, but the Kwinana job was just as intense and as threatening and very early in the Season.
To all of you young Firey's out there, we are still early/mid season and as you look towards the weather and wiping the sweat from your brow, remember Global warming & the el Nino` effect, the Summer season is only going to get longer and hotter and the fires are only going to be more intense.
You will find that through your records in some Brigade districts your fire turnout have been less, I believe this is due to, greater community awarenenss & preparedness, FESA's arson's team working hard and improved Fire supression techniques & equipment.
So as some of you sit there possibly wishing for more action cos it's too quiet, remember those before you and the hardships faced and overcome, because at the end of the day ~ We are Volunteers. Thanks........

Also calls declining due to the rapid pace of the new communities being built. I know we have lost 60% of the usual areas that would always go up. Must say even though we love calls, i agree no call is better as then no-one is faced with hardship
