A small story appears on page 10 of todays West Australian (19-4-07), stating that SJA are looking to recruit 40 qualified paramedics from overseas, to fill demand in WA.
A link to the story is here.

Really ? people dropping out, hrmmm thats fair enough though in a way it SUCKS they dont pay you for the first year of uni, bomber can you confirm to get your degree is it 3 years or 6 years ?
I mean if its a $$ problem sja should ask for some more chicken feed, i actually thought the government gave them alot to put more guys on the road.
Just wondering if the $$ went to other projects like things prob not needed.

Wow and I had a mate, who really wanted to join, couldn't for whatever reasons, he was a vollie, with SJA, as well as SES, but they said no 3 or 4 times, and he's now going for Firies.

Funny you mention Victoria, the very first class they run had 30 students in at the end of the 3 years all got employed, now becuase its being run between monash and vic uni its flooded the market over there a bit.
But in saying that you can get a job easy in the private sector for the companies that subcontract for NETCOM work though,

A friend of mine joined the NSW Ambulance Service after 2 failed applications to WA. After 3 years in Sydney he came back to WA as a lateral recruit and went straight on the road.....all paid for.
Its similar to the NSW Police, you have to pay for your OWN training then pay it off via HECS during your first few years of Police Service.

Personally I find it rather sad that we are recruiting Paramedics from overseas. I think its should be a rule that you must be a Australian Citizen to become a paramedic in WA. Being a Citizen should be worth something these days. Surely we can offer more places and train more paramedics locally in WA. How about raise the salaries of more senior paramedics and give them incentives to stay on.
There are so many young and old whom would happily take the opportunity to join the service and undertake the training. Outsourcing overseas just leads to loss of local jobs and less money injected in the economy.
It seems to be someone is just try to save money however at the cost of local jobs.. Im sure paramedics overseas wouldn't like it if we started taking their jobs would they!!.
We have enough skilled local Citizens whom would make excellent paramedics they just need to be given the chance.
