you're a volunteer.. no-one can force you to go to a fire ?meg wrote:Forgive me for being dense, but what exactly does that mean?Fastlane wrote:but it does mean the Minister can direct someone to take control of ANY fire, regardless of where it is.
Metro firies "directed" to go (say) to a fire down south? What about volunteers who have day jobs?
edit: forgive me if I sound paranoid but have heard some rumors...
Major fires 2006/07

major fires
a total fire ban doesn't mean anything when nothing is done about
people who i'llegally burn off when burning off is prohibited anyway
people who i'llegally burn off when burning off is prohibited anyway
I suspect it would mean that the Minister for Emergency Services can overrule Local Government's independance when it comes to the deployment of their BFB resources. Taken from Section 21(3)(a) and 21(3)(b) of the Bush Fires Act 1954....meg wrote:Forgive me for being dense, but what exactly does that mean?Fastlane wrote:but it does mean the Minister can direct someone to take control of ANY fire, regardless of where it is.

(3) (a) During a fire emergency period the Minister may
appoint a person to take charge of bush fire fighting
operations in an area to which the declaration made
under subsection (1) applies.
(b) Where a person is so appointed all local governments,
bush fire control officers, bush fire liaison officers and the
captains, lieutenants and members of bush fire brigades or
other persons shall comply with the directions given by
that person in connection with the suppression and
control of a fire which is burning in the area.
Just my interpretation....

So in short the minister can direct vollies to an incident under these clauses

Re: major fires
The problem is the fines just aren’t big enough to deter people from lighting up. The current fines need to be increased ten fold so if they do burn off when they shouldn’t it hits them where it really hurts. As for the bastards running around lighting up they should have a substantially higher jail time as a minimum sentence.rich wrote:a total fire ban doesn't mean anything when nothing is done about

Yes would have heard you. I was always on the 2nd light tanker radio doing constant hop overs. Even had a good one just after you guys left. Was desperate for tankers but most had left.
Suprised that you guys arent still there. We got back at 6 and they were trying to call us back there at 8.30. hard to get up though after a long shift on the ground
