APRS - part two

Post by robbage »

I'm running UI-View32 through an FM92 from Swanbourne this weekend. I suspect it's undermodulated. As far as I can tell, only GHZ is decoding it successfully (and even then not all the time). Go figure it. Raw

By the way, the Hills Amateur Radio Group (inc) are going to be setting up an APRS station in the near future so we started a web log where we will log our progress. Hopefully anybody else who wants to do something similar can benefit from it. Not much there yet. I also plan to show how anybody can set up a scanner and a PC to monitor APRS live (as opposed to using the internet and aprs.fi)

I changed the comment when I unplugged -7. It was originally "Not drowning - just waving" :-)
I changed the point where the TX audio is injected into the FM92. Seems to be getting out much better now, including RTH-3

Anyone have any comments on the recent upgrades to aprs.fi...?

It's working the same as always for me, which means the saved location works and it doesn't render station tracks properly when I zoom and scroll a lot. I like the overlay options. I reckon the bicycle overlay makes the map look better.

Have you seen beta.aprs.fi ? There's some new stuff in there, including integrating Street View, so if you're tracking a callsign, you can see the usual map, but also a street view snapshot of their location, a kind-of "see what they can see" view. Quite clever :)

Haven't looked at beta.aprs.fi but streetview is already available on aprs.fi.

Yep it's a Windoze APRS client.
http://www.ui-view.org/
Download AGW Packet Engine and you can use your PCs sound card to monitor the APRS network.

If you look at aprs.fi right now you should see VK6RN-13 in Swanbourne and also 'AU0073' in Fremantle which is an object created by VK6RN-13 (a lighthouse in this case). All done with UI-View32. VK6GHZ is also running an igate using it. An igate directs RF traffic onto the internet and eventually on to things like aprs.fi

If you're using a PC, UI-View with the AGW soundcard modem can do it.

Thanks Gav, is there any fancy way of configuring it at all for Perth conditions or anything like that?

Just having a look... nothing special required. If you're setting up a digi at home then under Options | Digipeater Setup, I'd select:

Enable digi (ticked)
Alias substitution (ticked)
WIDEn-n (not ticked)
TRACEn-n (not ticked)
Aliases (your callsign)
Sub Alias WIDE1-1
