2m/70cm repeaters and CTCSS

Post by Zebedee »

I'm on a bit of a mission to document the 2m/70cm repeaters in Perth and what they're capable of.

One of the things that I'm having trouble sourcing is which repeaters are enabled for CTCSS. I know for example that VK6RVP and VK6RUF both require a 123Hz tone before they will open up the squelch, but I believe that other repeaters are what you might call "CTCSS Optional" - i.e. they don't require a tone to be sent on the input, but the repeater itself will put out a tone on it's output.

That's handy for people like myself who have to transit the city and can get bombarded with pagers or LIPDs - we can set the radios to require tone on receive, but people talking into the repeater don't necessarily need a CTCSS-enabled radio themselves.

I wonder ... does anyone know for sure which repeaters do or don't have CTCSS - either as an option or as a requirement? I'm planning on doing it the hard way tonight and just listening on various repeaters both with and without tone and see if I can figure it out that way - but if someone has a list that could save me some work, that'd be even better ;)

VK6RBY 2m, VK6RAP 2m, VK6RLM, VK6RTH 2m, VK6RFM, VK6RCT, VK6RSR, VK6RBU 2m I'm pretty sure all transmit a tone.
VK6RNA 70cm is tone both ways. I believe the Albany 70cm is no tone (on the same freq as RNA)
Dunno about any others. I found RFM tone doesn't work too well with any of my rigs so I don't know if the tone is the wrong freq, drifts, or four of my rigs all have the same fault on one repeater freq ;-)

Thanks guys,

I knew of the WARG page - that was one of the first places I checked. However it doesn't mention repeaters like RAP having "optional tone" which is what I was looking for.

I'll keep plugging away :)

No CTCSS needed for RAA, RAL or RAW.

If you have access to the repeater, an audio connection from your radio to your PC and a program like WinTone, you can see if the repeater transmits a CTCSS tone.

I think I can also do that with my Icom handheld, it has a tone search function, not that I've ever tried to use it yet ;)

Good time to try it out! I can't find anything more recent (and free) than WinTone, which hasn't been supported for donkey's.
