Yagi antenna for SSB

Post by meg »

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on yagi antennas for 2m SSB? I'd like to get something that I can put on an "Armstrong" rotator to use with the newly refurbished FT 221 for SSB work, especially during summer when there is ducting.

I've seen the Cushcraft A14810S 10 element 2m yagi which seems an OK price, though there's also the Cushcraft Boomer 13 element 13B2 at about double the $$$. Any thoughts on whether the 13 element one is really worth the extra cash?

Yagi (pretty much identical to this but not a quad, just a yagi)

Boomer

The Quad (as linked above) is still less $$ than the Boomer, but I have a decent 2m radio for FM, so not overly fussed about using that mode on the FT 221.

Any other suggestions for antennas also appreciated!

Cheers
Meg

There's a pile of 2m yagis at the club. Are some of those going to be sold off? Check with Mick. Some of them need some work though. I wouldn't mind grabbing one that needs refurb but I wouldn't know how much to offer.

I don't know, but if they are looking at selling any of them, I'll find out today and let you know :-)

I had noticed them but assumed they were intended for some use, perhaps not!

The antenna you refer to as a quad is in fact a crossed yagi. 10 horizontal elements and 10 vertical elements....Easily mistaken for a Quad. Here's a link it the manual for it.

Download the Cushcraft manual. Its an old one, not updated since 2005, but I would assume the content is relevant today. URL to download it is http://www.cushcraft.com/pdf/hamcat.pdf

If you are interested in buying a yagi, check out the advert for Coman Antennas in AR Magazine. If you give them a ring he can usually fax you the specs.

If you are into making a yagi, here are a few sources:

G0KSC Optimised Wideband Array: http://www.g0ksc.co.uk

Amsat yagis: http://www.amsat.org/amsat-new/information/faqs/crow/

Cheap Yagis: http://www.fredspinner.com/W0FMS/CheapYagi/vjbcy.html

As you can see there are plenty of designs out there.
