Its a CB term that is slipping into amateur radio it means just listening to a conversation.
Personally I don't like it along with "on the side" and "handle" should stay on CB

Really ... ? Handle is a CB term ? ... :D I was talking to an amateur in Malaysia via the Fremantle repeater's Echolink and he asked me 'What is your 'handle ?' and I thought he was referring to my 'handheld' hahaha ... and I said to him that my 'handle' is Yaesu FT-60R and he said 'No no not your handheld but your 'handle' ... Your name ... and that was the first time I heard that term and I thought it was the official term for your name in international amateur radio and I kept using it since then ... hahaha ... I think I should stop using it after reading this article ... :o .. and also after I said 73 to him and said 'I am going clear' ... He laughed at me and said ... 'What is that ? ... You should say you are going QRT' ... Hmmm I guess the terms are different in different countries ... I guess in Malaysia they don't say 'Clear' for switching off your radio.

There is no real need to use the Q code on a repeater with good reception.
Just say you are going clear. The Q code is good for HF SSB contacts that are noisey.

Not really, it's used in many ways to identify somebody or something. Ask any programmer.
