Re: Mobile setup

Post by VK6DF »

i spent alot of time installing in ve commodores.. happy to answer questions.

In my 4x4 im running..

Codan 9323 with free dial setup for HF with 9350 auto tuner

Tait T2020 UHF with ALOT of various freq (bit useless now in Tom Price) with 1200ch control board. (was a TM8250 but got fed up with it.. piece of junk i recon)

Simoco SRM 9022 VHF High band for 2m, FESA and some other special stuff.

I tend to use commercial equipment as its my specialty and i can pretty much make them do what i want and easy and cheap to get parts and repair. Iv had alot of good reports with DXing on the HF only down fall is the low power above 26mhz so 10m a bit of a pain.

Ill take some pictures some time and show..

with a cable? *duck*

it's on a clip-on bracket and a butchered IPOD holder, so I could tilt it up/down and sideways.

Good install Fastlane and handy having very short runs of power cable and coax. Bummer about the intermittent contact in the base.. I certainly didn't spot it, but I think we noticed it once when we tested the continuity between centre and shield.
I'm pretty sure you're going to need a higher gain antenna if you want to get into the hills repeaters from your way. You've got three repeaters not far from you but they don't seem to get much use.

Wel i finally got the 706 installed into the Prado - however only with 2/70 running at the moment.

I am very keen to start experimenting with HF out of the Prado - however i am stuck as to what setup would be best.

I am thinking of getting the SG-237 ATU and hooking it up to a 7-8' aerial - prob mounted either on the bullbar or off the rear tyre.

What are your thoughts .. my main concern at the moment is what ATU to get for the HF mobile setup - the idea when i get to a camp site - to hook up a long wire (over a few trees) and then when back mobile - hook up the whip and use it on the road.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to the ATU and setup for the 4x4

What about the AT-180 tuner which is matched to the 706? I know nothing about it... just reading the Icom site.

or the Icom AH-4, make sure the read the specs as most ATUs will specify the minimum length of wire they will tune on.
Also the ATU should be at the base of the whip. Long wire ATU's will require a balun if you want to plug co-ax into the antenna side of things.

Codan 9350 auto tune antenna works well with the IC-706. I have also used a HF tapped whip with good results on my IC706.
