G'day Mug,

430 to 450 MHz is inside the 70cm amateur radio band, so it's likely that what you're hearing is related to amateurs in some way (I hope!!! )

The Wireless Institute of Australia published band plans (PDF) for all the amateur bands. According to the band plan which is basically a "gentleman's agreement" over which bits of which bands will be used for different things, your first frequency is in a reserved block for future repeater linking systems. The second frequency is in a block allocated to Amateur Television.

Hmmm that's true as well - however HC generally speaking doesn't use 70cm for any training. It's all 2m and HF when there's a class on (which there isn't this weekend )

But it means he'd be able to pick up people practicing for their F-calls on course weekends without too much trouble I bet!

Oh thanks ... now you're really taxing my memory!

145.425 is the frequency that we generally use for VHF and then on HF we tend to stick to around 28.300 - 28.400 MHz (part of the training involves changing frequency and re-establishing contact...)

If you're close enough you should be able to pick up trainees at some point during the course weekend - not everything is done in the shack obviously, there's other parts to the course as well.

And a gentle reminder to anyone who does want to have a listen, which of course anyone is more than welcome to do ... if you have transmit capabilities as well then we'd appreciate those frequencies being kept clear during the training as there's certain exercises that the course participants need to complete and having others jumping in can cause all kinds of confusion

Yep, we were operating from a modified system today since our usual "remote station" wasn't available. So we were on 2m and HF from the shack to a mobile station close by, therefore not needing a huge amount of power
