VX-7R here, but if it's cheap and it works, then who cares it still works! Probably last just as long too.

Quansheng have some new dual-band hand-held radios out from Jan 2009

http://www.qsfj.com/en/Product_info.asp?ID=42
Appears to be the base model

http://www.qsfj.com/en/Product_info.asp?ID=43
The intermediate

http://www.qsfj.com/en/Product_info.asp?ID=46
The advanced. This can be got for around $USD115 if you import the non-AU version.

Edit: Fixed the price to $USD

Dang - that looks pretty alright! And it can pick up the FESA frequencies...*sigh*

I've found that my Quansheng has _much_ better sensitivity than the Yaesu VX-7R (that I got so that I could pick up the FESA frequencies). If I had known these new Quanshengs were coming, I'd probably have just gotten one of them. I'd finally figured out the logic to programming them too!!!

Yes, the last one does look pretty good. As far as programming them... can you type up something that makes sense and turn it into a PDF? Maybe Q will use it in place of the Quanlish. :)

Just get them to include a Dr Suess hat with each unit :)

I should have a go at typing it up though, see if I can translate from my own brain!

So it's in Meglish ATM? :)

It's tempting to buy one just for the hell of it
