Reports that the Esperance beacon (146.580MHz) was coming into Denmark, W.A. moved me to have a listen. I heard *something* with my VX-5R but as the rig doesn't resolve CW I couldn't confirm it one way or the other.

Nice. Hamshack? Is that the usual peak time for ducting? I'm in Adelaide in March... would it fit in a carry-on?

Typo? The Esperance beacon is 144.568 not 146.580. As the Mt Barker beacon is so close in frequency 144.564 you would probably hear that on FM instead of Esperance.

Yep - typo and yes, it was probably Mt Barker's beacon I heard.

Believe it or not, but I have worked across the Bight using one of these whilst portable on the South Coast.

I made mine slightly differently with the PVC support across the middle of the narrow part of the antenna - That way I was able to alternate between horizontal & vertical polarisation.

You can probably make one that will knock down to carry in your luggage.

Thanks Rob. I've come across Moxon antennae before but I didn't pay much attention... That's exactly the sort of radiation pattern I need at work. I'm right up against the ocean and I think the F-to-B on my 3 el is out of whack
The yagi looks good. Finding the tubing that size might be tricky.. I've still got to check out a place in Malaga that Marty suggested.

Its certainly favoring the south, Cataby is S2 but Saddleback and Bunbury are full scale.
