Well then the story gets even more interesting if that is indeed the case. I just had a quick check of what callsigns are registered by logging into the gateway and the callsign mentioned on Sunday isn't listed, so I can only assume that the system admins have deleted the registration (bravo! :) )

I didn't realise that they'd gone so far as to register the callsign for gateway access since that wouldn't be required to just have a callsign show up on the "recently heard" list.

Whoever's monkeying around like this needs to be pulled into line quick-smart. It's not funny, it's not clever, and it's certainly not in the spirit of amateur radio.

Wow. Shows what lengths some people will go to I guess. But I couldn't imagine TOO many people wanting to part with that amount of cash, not if they were just wanting to cause mischief. But I guess there'll always be some with more money than brains ;)
You can get on D-star for $500 which isnt alot $$.
Bugger - mine cost me more than that! Mind you it was the radio with the DSTAR chip already installed, not an expansion to an existing radio which admittedly would be cheaper.

Yep ... and I managed to stuff that up too and made a typo in my callsign {sigh} :)

Luckily some eagle-eye spotted it and I could correct it before I embarrassed myself too badly.

I wonder what's being done elsewhere in the world with regards to DSTAR gateway registrations, is it all a "gentleman's agreement" in the spirit of amateur radio, or is there some kind of verification required as per Echolink?

That might be a good starting point, to find out what is current best practice around the world for gateway registration, and to go from there.

Some CBers just want the extra power (legal or not) rather than causing mischief. There are plenty operating 50w 70cm rigs illegally expanded to 477MHz. "But we're not transmitting more than 5 watts!" Porcine Aviation.

You don't need to be registered on the gateway to use d-star locally.

So you can have half a dozen people all using the same call-sign?

We are talking about the 2 callsigns that were registered to use the gateway without the owners of those callsigns knowing, callsigns have since been taken of the gateway register.Cheers Grant vk6ngs

I don't know how it would go if they all spoke at once, but a pirate could do that.

Two radios, both with the same callsign, on the same repeater would probably give it a serious case of indigestion ;)
