I think that's one of the key things about the Quanshengs. For someone just getting into the hobby, there's already a fair outlay to get licenced. So being able to get your hands on an inexpensive handheld as your first radio is always a plus.

Then there's the fact that since they are on the cheaper side, they do well as second or backup radios, for those times when you don't want to take your "good" radio somewhere for whatever reason. I still have both of my Quanshenge - they don't get much use any more, but I've got 'em just in case ;)

5 watts on an external antenna can do good things.

Indeedy robbage. Power is not everything, most of it is in the antenna system.

What's the point in pumping 400W PeP into a 3 metre piece of wire on HF? Anyone?

on it 28MHz it would be a quarter wave (almost)

Wattage

Hi Again Guys,

yes its much better to improve your antenna system than up the wattage.

Thats what were trying to do up the HARG, improve antennae, feedlines, Rotator etc. Only then will we look at upping the wattage. When the CQWW competion was on, on the weekend, I said they should limit it to 100watts. If all Hams stuck to this it would be great, but unfortunately even some hams are greedy for a competition win so will use 1500 watts and tell everyone they are on 100.

Anyway just my thoughts

$39 deliv'd to Oz? => Great fund-raiser for Ham Clubs!

Folks - with all due respect - if it's possible to pay so little for a radio, that's been so well received (ie, except for its lack of DTMF functions), why aren't you using this [rumored] fact to your Radio Club's advantage?

Check it out, make a bulk-order of which ever model radio would better suit your members needs, slap 20% (or more) on-top & call it a fund-raiser.

Wouldn't your club have some uses for the proceeds from such a sale?

Then... why complain! Take fair advantage of an opportunity... :D

PS Perhaps some of the licensed Hams, who are also importing these radios would like to increase their volume, ie, by developing "affiliate" programs for radio clubs?

You, too, have an opportunity here...

You raise an interesting point, ivi. I'm sure that some clubs may well be interested in such a thing, it just takes someone to organise it :)

It is a great little radio though for it's price, and I remember when I did my Foundation course through Ham College that it was mentioned as a good, inexpensive, "first radio" for people who wanted to get on air quickly with minimum expenditure ;)

Bulk Buys

Hi Guys,

Ive been doing this already for the last 3 years. There are people selling the radios in the East for 139 dollars to club members. If a total of 10 are wanted I give a 10 percent discount and get it sent direct from China to the Club. Its just up to the club how they want to do it.

BTW Unfortunately Ive had to increase the price of the Q/S to $119 delivered anywhere in OZ. If you look back at the soooooo knowledgable 2metremans comment of 39 dollars USD you will know that today its 60 dollars Aust plus shipping from CHina plus shipping in Australia and 10 bucks for GST. Oh and dont forget bank fees for the transfer to China.

At 99 bucks I was making nothing. When the Aussie dollar returns to a reasonable level Ill be happy to return it to $99.

so there you go..............thats honesty at its best. Try getting that from another dealer.

Cheers
Geoff

I'm not sure what club you are referring to, but I'd be surprised if there are more than one or two people reading this forum that are keen to buy a Quansheng (or similar) right now.

Bit of a bugger, but when the exchange rate's all over the place, it can't be helped :)

Still good value though - coz the exchange rate will be affecting the prices of all the other radios too, not just the Quanshengs.

I'm not sure what you are referring to Geoff. I was asking what club iVi is referring to and pointing out that I doubt there are enough people reading this thread to do this 'bulk order' thing ivi mentioned. The best option I see for anybody wanting one is to call you.

OH I see

I think what IVI was saying that if one person from a club was on here it wouldnt be bad for them to contact the club and then probably contact me.

I thought you were talking about people in General but now I understand.

BTW does 2 metre man have a callsign??

Cheers

I suspect most of the handful of us reading this thread already have a handheld (or more than one?) - and at least a couple of us have the Quanshengs already.
