Idea for possible new streaming scanner

Hi Folks.

I'm thinking of setting up a new streaming scanner. This one will mainly cover the waterbombers and local BFS channels.

Now because these channels aren't always in use the stream would have a lot of "dead air". What I'm proposing is to have a second radio streaming something else (say, 6DS or Railway) with an automatic switch that detects audio on the FRS radio and switches the stream audio over to that radio.

..............................................
:------------- Standby radio (6DS, railway etc)
Radio stream :----Automatic Switch----+
.................(detects audio on FESA..:------------- FESA radio ( waterbombers, local BFS etc)
.................radio and switches audio)

I'm mostly interested in this as a technical project but I'm keen for feedback. Is this something you'd listen to? What service should the standby radio be tuned to?

I think its a great idea. We do indeed need to kick around ideas as to what is 'interesting' to the general public to listen to.

6DS I'm guessing not to much interesting info, railway would be a lot more entertaining. Buses have their moments as well.

Sounds like an interesting project!

I'd suggest railways - either the freight stuff or the Transperth metro trains.

That sounds like a great idea Gav. The bombers would be especially good to listen to during the summer months.

Sounds great - I have been considering streaming my local BFS (Northam) from a Linux server, but haven't had the time.....

What do you consider your local BFS?

Whatever is in radio range. Swan, Hope Valley, some DEC stuff... :)

The Railways would sound like a good idea, only because that is my area of special interest.

I think that you will find that the existing feed only covers Transperth, mainly the security side, plus station operations etc.
It would be good to get some feed of the freight areas, such as Eastern Control (Forrestfield - Northam) and South-West Control (around Kwinana, and down to Pinjarra), and perhaps Forrestfield / Kewdale Yards.

Whilst most of these frequencies are well known, I can probably provide some information, is required.

DSD

Whatever you've got, post 'em up ;)

Can't hurt to have a variety of frequencies. Then if one particular service is quiet, perhaps it can change over to something else. Or if we know in advance that something special might be happening with one service or other, we can change the scanner across.

(Either that, or other people may be inspired to do the same thing, but with different radio services.)
