Radios Comms onboard a Carrier or Other Ship

Post by numloxx »

Hi all,

I was watching a documentary about carriers and they use hand held radios to communicate on board.

Any idea how these work, as you would think using a radio in a iron structure would block all the signals.

Do they use a internal repeater system?

I'm no expert but logic tells me that they would indeed have their own repeater system on board. Depending on the size of the ship they would more than likely have multiple repeaters.

Im not sure about the massive carrier ships, however some of the ships that i have worked on use a low power "leaky feeder" system for internal communications. Therefore it would be impossible to catch any of their comms as it only has a small coverage area.

Now-a-days, United States Navy ships run Trunked Radio Systems. Either APCO25 or EDACS.
