Re: Ship position receiving and sharing
Someone in or near Fremantle would be the best. To the OP, try getting in touch with VK6DN - Don.
He lives in Fremantle as far as I know and he also runs IRLP node 6200 on repeater VK6RFM. He may be your man, if he is interested in the project he could possibly co-host it.
Cheers

And it's 9600 baud data, so you need to use the discriminator output on the radioBlinky wrote:and not be scanning between the 2 frequencies as that would probably miss the burst of data.VK2GEL wrote:Yes it's only a click and you need to have the squelch off at least at first. Make sure you have FM selected.

Thanks Gavin, you can hear the clicks through the normal audio output, but to decode the data you will need a rig with a discriminator output. It's easy to modify most scanners http://www.discriminator.nl/index-en.html or use a rig with a data out pin, usually one of the accessory socket pins.

If you're using a ham 2m rig with a standard packet connector then you can use the high speed signal for 9600. It's as good as a discriminator signal (and probably is)

Well yesterday evening I saw the most activity I have seen in my short look at AIS. Might give it another go sometime but it's low on the priorities list.

excellant site that recommend to anyone with intrests in that area
Re: Ship position receiving and sharing
Isn't it always the way. I have had a visitor from Karratha this weekend so I went to show the AIS display on aprs.fi of the shipping off the NW coast. It's alway worked before but today I notice no AIS traffic showing for the NW. It's been a while since I last looked so don't know how long it has not been working.
So if you did not know before, then now you do.

Re: Ship position receiving and sharing
I'm decoding now using AISMon. I'm about 750m from Swanbourne Beach at work. The audio can be heard but the burst is a lot shorter than I expected.
Even with a good quality receiver using the 9600 port I'm getting a 33% success rate according to the AISMon display. The sound device is on-board so that probably doesn't help. I'll give it a go with a proper sound card some time. Decoding the AISMon serial port with VB6 is going to suck.
