Can someone enlighten me when the first A-SET [& possible number] went into service? Just wondering while travelling on them this morning.

Hey thanks for that, how do you know the 'SETS' as i.e number 343 doesn't fit into 01 - 48

Prob set 43 as one car on the a set will be 343 and the other car will be 243. Similarly for b sets

The set number is comprised of the last couple of digits from the three digit number that's located on the front, centre, or rear of the train, both internally and externally. In your example of 348 the Set Number is 48.


In the case of the A-Series train (comprised of 2 cars) the first digit denotes the following:
2xx - Front (Known as the 'A' End)
3xx - Rear (B End)

For the B-Series (comprised of 3 cars) it is the following:
4xx - Front (A End)
6xx - Centre
5xx - Rear (B End)


On each car that makes up the set, there is also a three letter code before the three digit number. These are located at the end of each car on the outside, just below the level of the platform.

A-Series:
AEA 2xx - A End
AEB 3xx - B End

B-Series:
BEA 4xx - A End
BET 6xx - Centre
BEB 5xx - B End
