Help keeping occupied on a train journey? I have a three hour train journey next week, and I've never travelled on a train since I was a kid; I drive everywhere! How can I keep myself entertained (I am travelling alone)? I find it hard to read in cars; is a train the same kind of motion?

Scanner is not much chop on the train in my experience. Well not on the Perth electric trains anyway. God knows how the transit guards stay in contact with their base because I've tried frequency hopping to follow them from station to station and it's generally pretty scratchy all the time.

My mobile has built in GPS, and it's *extremely* hard to get a lock on satellites whilst on the train, even with the phone sitting flush against the window. Must be something to do with the power lines above and the solid metal roof of the trains.

Cheers

Yeah I had similar problems back in the days when I was using the trains regularly so I used my phone for music (not going to be suckered into this apple buying mania that everyone is in)...occasionally. But 99% of the time I just read a book, and got off if I realised where I was at Claisebrook otherwise it was McIver or Perth. :P I recommend the booking reading option great time to squeeze some reading into a busy day!
