 They'll be waiting longer than 2020. Digital comms are hopeless once the system gets complex.

DFES voice will remain analogue for the the next 20 years. There are significant barriers to digitisation of voice comms for the fire and SES comms.
There is now a significant amount of data being sent from each vehicle either via GSM or SATCOMM (Yes, actual satcomm)

With all the heat surrounding Huawei, does anyone think that'll affect the plans? I heard somewhere on a podcast that they've been banned from trading in Australia, but take that with a grain of salt.

No just not permitted to provide equipment to nbn or public 5G networks. Huawei isn't banned altogether.

Looks like a review is in place. WA appears more concerned that a potential trade embargo could limit component availability.

Seems like some of the guards have new radios now, they look like Tait handhelds rather than the standard Motorola ones. Probably getting ready for the digital changeover. Will they be using P25 or DMR?

My understanding is that if it's LTE, it's similar to a mobile phone network which of course is not accessible by anyone without the authentication hardware.

How can LTE be used for radio communications?

Why not? It's just data.

Long story short LTE is radio communications. Mobile phones are nothing more than a radio communications system being driven by some fairly good smarts.

PTToC (Press to Talk on Cellular), Network Radios etc all use the mobile phone network as the basis of a wide area two way radio communications network. Where ever you have access to 3G, 4G, 5G or WiFi you can establish a two way system using programs like Zello, WAVE, Voxer etc.

But if Transperth are going through all the trouble of replacing the old radio system infrastructure, if they are indeed switching to PTToC, why would they bother?

I think you'll need to see the bigger picture. Having LTE to trains and devices means you can more connectivity and uses plus future proofing.
